UNIBED – ‘Miscanthus’ offers a sustainable and superior solution for horse bedding needs. Cultivated from the versatile and eco-friendly miscanthus grass, our bedding product undergoes a meticulous chopping and dust-extraction process, ensuring optimal comfort, hygiene, and environmental responsibility for both horses and their caretakers.

‘Miscanthus’ is a great bedding option for equestrians but the sustainability benefits, is where the team here at UNIBED are extremely passionate to share with customers.
Sustainability of Miscanthus: Miscanthus, known for its rapid growth and minimal environmental impact, represents a sustainable crop choice. Here’s why:

  • Renewable Resource: Miscanthus is a perennial grass that can be harvested annually without the need for replanting, making it a renewable resource.
  • Low Input Crop: Miscanthus requires minimal fertilizers, pesticides, and water compared to traditional bedding materials, reducing the ecological footprint of its cultivation.
  • Carbon Sequestration: The deep root system of miscanthus helps sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, mitigating climate change impacts.

Benefits of Chopped and Dust-Extracted ‘Miscanthus’ as an equine bedding solution:

  • Respiratory Health: Our bedding undergoes a thorough dust-extraction process, minimizing airborne particles that can lead to respiratory issues in horses and humans, ensuring a healthier environment for all.
  • Comfort and Support: The chopped miscanthus fibers provide excellent cushioning and support, promoting restful sleep and reducing the risk of pressure points and discomfort for your horse.
  • Absorbency and Odor Control: Miscanthus bedding has high absorbency properties, effectively managing moisture and ammonia levels in the stable, thus reducing unpleasant odors and maintaining a clean and hygienic environment.
  • Easy Disposal and Sustainability: Once used, miscanthus bedding can be composted or utilized as a natural fertilizer, completing a sustainable cycle and minimizing waste sent to landfills.

How to Use Unibed Bedding

We are often asked ‘how do you use UNIBED’ which sometimes can be a difficult question to answer. Every horse is different, every user has their own bed preferences but below is a baseline in which you can use UNIBED.

We recommend using 4-5 approx 20kgs bales, to set up your initial bed (of whichever UNIBED product you prefer) which should offer a medium-deep litter in a standard 12×12 stable.

Most users will then find they are able to use just 1 x bale a week to keep on top of their bed. Most customers find they can skip their stable out daily and remove the wet once a week.

Our products are also great when used together. Using either our ‘Oilseed Rape Straw’ or ‘Miscanthus’ as your initial base and the ‘Wheat Straw – Lavender’ as your top up, is a great way to benefit from the different properties each bedding type offers.

Equally, all products can be used solely on their own in whichever way best suits the user and their horse.
